Making a Difference

The mission of the YMCA in Canada is to foster the growth of all persons in spirit, mind and body and heighten their sense of responsibility to each other and the global community. Thanks to the exceptional efforts of local Associations, dedicated staff and incredible volunteers, we continue to fulfill this purpose more effectively every year. Here's how we're doing:

Accessibility:

Through YMCA financial assistance, the YMCA remains accessible to all:

  • $20.9 million in YMCA financial assistance enabled 178,000 individuals and families to benefit from YMCA activities
  • $1.9 million raised through YMCA fundraising sent 10,400 kids to camp
  • $2.1 million in donations support families with kids in YMCA Child Care

Reach:

  • 1.8 million people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities served in more than250 communities
  • 511,500 children and 223,800 youth up to age 17 participate in YMCA programs
  • Largest provider of not-for-profit child care in Canada
  • 2 out of 5 YMCA members participate as a family

Volunteers:

  • 20,800 volunteers contribute 950,300 volunteer hours to their YMCA
  • 2,500 volunteers and staff were recently certified as Fitness and Aquatics Instructors

Donors:

  • 39,000 donors give $22.6 million in annual giving and capital support to the YMCA

Health, fitness & recreation:

  • 927,000 members and participants stay active through YMCA health, fitness and recreation
  • 73,000 kids earn YMCA swim badges each year
  • YMCA Canada recently certified 740 swim instructors and 1,430 fitness leaders

Camp:

  • 112,000 children and youth including 2,000 children with disabilities make good friends and learn valuable life lessons at YMCA Day and Resident Camps
  • 5,300 youth gain leadership skills at YMCA Day and Resident Camps
  • $1.9 million raised through YMCA fundraising sent 10,400 kids to camp

Child Care:

  • The YMCA is the largest provider of not-for-profit child care in Canada and through our financial assistance programs, the YMCA remains accessible to all
  • 15.8 million hours of school age care is provided through YMCA child care
  • $2.1 million in donations supports families with kids in YMCA Child Care

International Development & Education:

  • 47 Canadian YMCAs have 36 partnerships with YMCAs around the world. Together, they work on strengthening youth leadership, health education, job training and peace and conflict resolution. As result:
  • More than 750,000 overseas YMCA participants (mainly youth) in 17 countries benefitted from YMCA programs in 2005-2008, with support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
  • 73,000 participants in Canada take part in YMCA international education, exchanges and visits.

Community Outreach & Settlement Services:

  • 437,000 individuals participate in YMCA Outreach Programs, including stay in school, youth gambling prevention, newcomer services and literacy

Employment Training:

  • 150,500 youth and young adults receive training in YMCA employment programs
  • 73,800 adults benefit from YMCA training related to finding employment

Partnerships:

  • 300+ YMCA partnerships with health groups, school boards, hospitals, municipalities, provincial health departments and the federal government has led to innovative approaches to healthy living and community building.

Leadership Development:

  • 2,240 YMCA youth leadership programs across Canada support the growth of young people
  • 5,300 youth gain leadership skills at YMCA Day Camps
  • 8 outstanding volunteers and staff were awarded the YMCA Fellowship of Honour in 2009 by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of their outstanding leadership and community capacity building.
